Grand Bazaar

1461, the year that Fatih Sultan Mehmet started the construction of the Grand Bazaar, was accepted as the foundation year of the Grand Bazaar. In addition to the valuable items of the former rich such as jewellery, precious metals, fur and fine weapons, most of the state treasury was kept in safes here. Evliya Çelebi described this place as a mighty fortress. Among the two covered bazaars that form the core of the Grand Bazaar, the İç Bedesten, or Cevahir Bedesten, is controversial among the authors, but it is most likely a Byzantine structure and measures 48m x 36m. The New Bedesten, on the other hand, is the second important structure of the Grand Bazaar, which was started to be built in 1461, and is known as Sandal Bedesten. The name Sandal Bedesten was given here because a fabric called Sandal, which is woven from cotton and silk in one way, is sold here.
